10 Insider Tips for Your First Disneyland Visit

Disneyland castle

Visiting Disneyland for the first time can feel overwhelming. There's so much to see, so many rides to ride, and so much to eat — and only so many hours in the day. After helping thousands of families plan their first trip, here are the ten tips we share most often.

1. Arrive Before the Park Opens

This is the single biggest tip. The first hour after rope drop is the magic hour: low crowds, short lines, and the best photo lighting. Aim to be at the gates 45 minutes before official opening time.

2. Download the Disneyland App Before You Go

The app is your park lifeline. Use it to check wait times, mobile order food, see show schedules, and manage Lightning Lane reservations. Download it the night before so you're ready.

3. Stay Hydrated (and Save Money)

Bottled water is expensive in the parks, but you can ask for free cups of ice water at any quick-service restaurant. Bring a reusable bottle and refill it throughout the day.

"The biggest mistake first-timers make is trying to do everything in one day. Slow down, enjoy a snack, watch a parade, and let the magic find you."

4. Use Single Rider Lines

If you don't mind splitting up, single rider lines on attractions like Indiana Jones, Radiator Springs Racers, and Matterhorn can save you 30–60 minutes per ride.

5. Eat at Off Hours

Lunch from 11 AM to 1 PM and dinner from 5 PM to 7 PM means long lines. Eat early or late to skip the crowds. Bonus: ride lines shrink during peak meal times.

6. Make Dining Reservations 60 Days Out

Popular sit-down restaurants like Blue Bayou and Cafe Orleans book up weeks in advance. Set a calendar reminder for 60 days before your trip to grab a table.

7. Wear Broken-In Shoes

You'll walk 8–12 miles per day. This is not the trip to break in new sneakers. Bring a backup pair if you have the room — your feet will thank you.

8. Watch the Parade From Main Street

Most people crowd the hub by the castle, but the start of Main Street near the train station has fantastic views and a much earlier exit when the parade ends.

9. Buy a Lightning Lane Multi Pass

It's the modern replacement for FastPass and absolutely worth the money on busy days. Book your first three attractions the moment you enter the park.

10. Build in Rest Time

If you're staying multiple days, plan a midday break back at the hotel. The kids (and you) will recharge and be ready for evening fireworks.

One Last Thing

Don't forget to look up. Disneyland is filled with details — hidden Mickeys, themed soundtracks in each land, sidewalk paint that changes texture as you cross into new areas. The magic is in the details, so let yourself notice them.
